Alarms

Smoke, heat and carbon monoxide alarms are self-contained detectors that sound a loud warning when they sense smoke, a sharp rise in temperature or dangerous levels of CO. We carry mains, sealed-battery and radio-frequency models from Firehawk, X-Sense, Kidde and Hispec, including the X-Sense ProConnected range with its home base station.

Also stocked are combination smoke and heat units and disabled toilet alarm kits. Open a trade account for trade rates, with next working day delivery across NI and ROI on in-stock lines ordered before 5pm.

How to choose the right alarms for a property

Picking alarms is about matching the detector type to the risk in each room, then choosing a power supply and interlink method that suits the installation.

Detector types

  • Optical smoke alarms respond well to slow, smouldering fires and suit hallways, landings and living rooms.
  • Heat alarms trigger on high or rapidly rising temperature, so they work in kitchens, garages and lofts where smoke alarms nuisance-trip.
  • Carbon monoxide alarms belong in rooms with boilers, stoves, open fires or other fuel-burning appliances.
  • Combination alarms house more than one sensor in a single unit.

Power supply and interlinking

Mains-powered alarms with rechargeable lithium or 9V battery back-up are the usual choice for new builds and rewires, and many use fast-fix bases or deep pattresses to speed up second fix. Sealed 10-year battery alarms suit existing homes where running cable is impractical. Radio-frequency models, such as the Firehawk RF-link and X-Sense ProConnected ranges, interlink wirelessly so every alarm sounds together.

Positioning and compliance

Ceiling mounting near the centre of a room is typical, away from corners, lights and air vents. CO alarms are generally fitted at head height or on the ceiling, depending on the manufacturer's guidance. Requirements for the number, type and interlinking of alarms differ between new homes, rented property and existing dwellings, so check current building regulations and the manufacturer's instructions for each job.

For panel-based systems in commercial buildings, see our fire alarm systems.
