Electric Meters
Electricity meters are devices that measure the electrical energy consumed or generated by a property, flat or circuit, usually in kilowatt hours. Our range includes single-phase and CESCO three phase kWh meters, Emlite coin and smart online top-up prepayment meters, a Euro coin prepayment meter, a 100A mains and solar kWh meter and a GARO solar distribution board with meter.
Account customers buy at trade prices, and in-stock meters ordered before 5pm Monday to Friday are delivered the next working day across NI and the Republic of Ireland.
How to choose an electricity meter
Sub-meters are used by landlords, holiday let owners, caravan parks, businesses and solar installers to measure energy use separately from the main utility meter.
Types of meter
- Single-phase kWh meters - for flats, outbuildings, individual circuits and small premises.
- Three phase kWh meters - such as the CESCO 100A, for commercial units and larger loads.
- Coin prepayment meters - Emlite sterling coin meters or Euro coin meters, ideal for holiday homes and short-term lets.
- Online top-up meters - the Emlite smart meter lets users add credit remotely.
- Solar meters - for recording generation from PV systems, including a GARO board with integrated meter.
Key specifications
Check the maximum current (for example 45A or 100A), whether the meter is single or three phase, the mounting style (DIN rail or surface), and the display or pulse output needed. If you will bill tenants for electricity, confirm the meter is approved for billing purposes and check any local rules on resale of electricity.
Installation tips
Meters should be installed by a competent electrician after the supply is safely isolated. Surface meters often sit in a meter box, while DIN rail meters can be fitted in a consumer unit board or enclosure. Never interfere with the network operator's utility meter, which remains their property. Follow current wiring regulations and the manufacturer's instructions.
