Communication Cable
Communication cable is low-voltage cable that carries data, audio, video or signalling rather than mains power, connecting devices such as routers, TVs, alarm panels, speakers and telephones. This range brings together CAT5e and CAT6 network cable, RG59, RG11, CT100 and shotgun coax, alarm and Kilflam fire alarm cable, 2 and 3 pair telephone cable, bell wire and 79 strand speaker cable.
Most lines come on 100mt coils or 305m boxes. Trade pricing is available on account, with in-stock orders placed by 5pm Mon–Fri delivered next working day across NI and ROI.
Choosing communication cable for your installation
Communication cables are designed around the signal they carry. Using the right type keeps signals clean, avoids interference and makes systems easier to test and maintain.
Which cable for which system
- Data networks and IP devices – CAT5e and CAT6 network cable, including external waterproof-sheathed versions.
- TV, satellite and analogue CCTV – coaxial cable such as CT100, RG6 shotgun, RG59 and RG11.
- Intruder alarms and access control – 4 to 12 core alarm cable.
- Fire alarm systems – fire resistant cable such as Kilflam Enhanced 3000.
- Telephones – 2 and 3 pair internal cable, and PJ poly cable for external runs.
- Audio – 2 core speaker cable; doorbells – bell wire.
Segregation from mains
Communication cables operate at much lower voltages than power cables, so they need to be segregated for safety and to avoid interference. Use separate compartments in trunking, keep a sensible distance on parallel runs and cross power cables at right angles. Current wiring regulations set out the requirements for mixing circuits of different voltage bands, and data cabling standards give recommended separation distances.
Indoor vs outdoor
Most communication cables are made for internal use. For runs outside or between buildings, choose cable with an external-grade, UV-resistant or waterproof sheath, run it in duct where buried, and seal entry points into the building.
Planning for the future
Run spare cables or extra cores at first fix where access will be difficult later, and label both ends of every run. Terminating data cable into patch panels and comms cabinets keeps the system organised.
