Glands
Cable glands are fittings that secure a cable where it enters an enclosure, sealing the entry, anchoring the cable against pull-out and, on armoured cable, providing earth continuity through the armour. We stock nylon glands from Deligo with IP68 ratings in 16mm to 25mm sizes, PG glands with locknuts and black nylon glands in packs.
For SWA cable there are Unicrimp BW brass glands, CW industrial brass kits and QBW gland kits from 20mm to 63mm, many supplied with locknut, shroud and earth tag. All available at trade rates, with next working day NI and ROI delivery on stock orders placed by 5pm.
How to choose the right cable gland
A gland only does its job if it matches the cable type, the cable diameter and the environment. Selecting the wrong size can leave an entry loose or unsealed, so check each of the points below.
Nylon glands vs SWA glands
- Nylon (plastic) glands suit unarmoured cables such as flex and PVC sheathed cable entering plastic or metal enclosures. Each one lists a clamping range, for example 6 to 12mm.
- BW glands are designed for SWA armoured cable in dry, indoor locations. They clamp the armour wires but do not seal the inner bedding.
- CW glands add an inner and outer seal, making them a common choice for outdoor, damp or exposed installations.
Sizing correctly
Gland sizes such as 20S, 20, 25, 32, 40 and 50 relate to the thread size and the overall cable diameter they accept. Measure the cable's outer sheath and, for SWA, the diameter over the armour, then check the manufacturer's sizing chart. The 20S size is for smaller 20mm cables, while 20 covers larger ones within the same thread. Kits that include a locknut, PVC shroud and earth tag save sourcing parts separately.
Installation tips
Drill or punch a clean hole to the thread size, fit the gland, tighten to the maker's guidance and use the locknut inside the box. On SWA, fit the earth tag between the gland and enclosure and connect it to the main earth terminal where required. Slide the shroud on before terminating to protect the gland from moisture and dirt. Pair glands with suitable galvanised and PVC enclosures, and see strippers and crimp tools for cable preparation. Check current wiring regulations for armour earthing requirements.
