How to choose a TP&N distribution board
Three phase boards serve offices, shops, farms, workshops and larger homes with a three phase supply. Choosing the right size and specification now makes alterations and additions easier later.
Understanding ways
On a TP&N board, a way is normally one position on each of the three phases. A 12 way board therefore offers 36 single pole positions, or 12 triple pole positions, or a mix. Plan for the triple pole devices feeding motors and sub-boards first, then single-phase circuits spread across the phases.
What to check
- Number of ways - 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 or 24 way in this range; allow spare capacity.
- Incomer - a 125A main switch for isolation; overcurrent protection for the sub-main is provided upstream.
- Surge protection - a 4 pole Type 2 device is supplied with these boards.
- Cable entry - plan gland positions for incoming and outgoing cables.
Fitting out the board
Populate the board with compatible devices: single and triple pole MCBs for overcurrent protection and Type A RCBOs where circuits need earth leakage protection. Balance single-phase loads across L1, L2 and L3 to keep the neutral current down.
Installation and compliance
Three phase boards are typically fed with SWA armoured cable sized by the designer for load, voltage drop and fault level. Installation, testing and certification should be carried out by a competent electrician to current wiring regulations (BS 7671 in the UK) and the manufacturer's instructions.
