Muck creates 24-7 Power Supply

Muck creates 24-7 Power Supply

For the first time, the islanders on Muck after installing a number of solar panels and 6 wind turbines can now operate a 24 hour power supply.

Muck is the smallest of four main islands in the Small Isles, Scotland measuring approximately 2.5 miles east to west with a total population of 38.

Last year the Isle of Muck Community Enterprise LTD received £978,840 from the Big Lottery Fund in which they used to help pay for renewable energy projects. Until just over a week ago the Islanders used diesel generators and found themselves to be allocated to nine hours a day with allocated time slots in which they could use the washing machine.

Now that they have switched as well as micro hydro-electric schemes, the island also has wind turbines and photo-voltaic cells which harness the power of the sun.
