Does what happen in Vegas stay in Vegas?
Las Vegas has been well known for its famous saying “What happens in Vegas…Stays in Vegas!” However this is all set to change as Vegas is working on new street lighting known as “intellistreet” lighting. These new lights are set to monitor everything that happens in Vegas through its new technology.
The wireless LED and computer operated lights are not just able to illuminate the streets; they also have the ability to play music, display police alerts, weather alerts and traffic alerts. Another feature is that the lights themselves will be able to interact with the pedestrians while also streaming live video of activity within the surround area.
However local residents as well as thousands of tourists that hit Vegas feel that it is an invasion of privacy as the lights record people with both video and audio. Neil Rohleder of the, Public Works Department stated “the main reason for installing the new system of streetlights was not to invade peoples’ privacy but to basically develop a system which is more than just your standard lighting component.”
Daphne Lee a civil rights activist said that she is worried about her freedom as an American Citizen. As the new technology will monitor us from the instance we leave the comfort of our homes to the moment when we arrive home.
Harwood the inventor defended his lighting system saying “I find whenever I go to an airport I have to strip myself of most of my clothes and walk through a scanner, which I find more invasive than anything intellistreets does.”
However here in the UK and in Holland we already have street lights which can talk and record CCTV videos reprimanding people for littering offense and any other minor offenses. The new intellistreet lights are very energy-efficient saving more than 50% in energy and although controlled by an internet based module if hacked the system send a warning and shuts down and it is heavily encrypted.
The system itself is basically a guard cam security system and a guard cam led lighting system all combined into the one.
