How to choose the right carbon monoxide alarm

Fit a CO alarm in each room containing a fuel-burning appliance and consider bedrooms or rooms where flues pass through. Manufacturers typically specify a horizontal distance from the appliance and a mounting height on a wall or ceiling. Avoid enclosed cupboards, positions directly above sinks or cookers, and areas near doors, windows or extractor fans where air movement may dilute readings.

Integration with fire alarms

CO alarms within the same brand range can usually be interlinked with smoke alarms and heat alarms, giving a single coordinated system. Mains-powered units should be installed in line with current wiring regulations and the manufacturer's instructions. Requirements for CO detection also vary between Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and Great Britain, so check the regulations that apply.
