RCBO’s
RCBOs are single protective devices that combine an MCB and an RCD, giving each circuit its own overcurrent and earth leakage protection. Stock includes Garo 1+N Type A RCBOs in B characteristic from 6A to 40A, Garo 2 module C characteristic units, Garo 100mA single module RCBOs, and Live Electrical single module double pole 30mA Type A mini RCBOs.
Open a trade account for trade rates, and have in-stock RCBOs on site the next working day in Northern Ireland or the Republic when you order by 5pm Monday to Friday.
How to choose RCBOs for a consumer unit
Fitting an RCBO on every circuit means an earth fault on one circuit trips only that circuit, rather than half the board as happens with a shared RCD. When choosing, work through the following points.
Key specifications
- Rated current - 6A to 40A in our range, chosen to protect the circuit cable.
- Tripping curve - B characteristic for most domestic circuits, C characteristic where loads have higher inrush, such as some lighting and motor circuits.
- Residual sensitivity - 30mA for additional protection of people; 100mA where the device provides fire or fault protection rather than personal protection.
- RCD type - Type A detects AC and pulsating DC leakage, which suits modern electronic equipment.
- Breaking capacity - 6kA across our Garo range; confirm it exceeds the prospective fault current.
Module width and board compatibility
Single module RCBOs let you protect more circuits in a smaller enclosure, while 2 module devices take double the DIN rail space. Check that the RCBO suits your board's busbar, and use a matching RCBO busbar where required, available in busbar and accessories. For empty main switch enclosures, see our consumer unit boards.
Installation notes
Connect the neutral exactly as the manufacturer specifies, as an RCBO cannot measure residual current without it. Test each device with an RCD tester once installed. If you only need overload protection, standard MCBs may be enough. Work to current wiring regulations at all times.
