LED lighting to become more popular

The uptake of LED lighting for use as general lighting in a home or business is set to accelerate dramatically over the latter half of the current decade.

Such is the finding of a new study by Global Information, which provides a worldwide forecast of the consumption of LEDs used in interior and exterior, decorative and functioning lighting.

Published by ElectroniCast Consultants, the LEDs in General Lighting report shows that the consumption of this form of lighting will grow by 37.1 per cent per annum between 2011 and 2016.

This will then accelerate to an annual growth rate of 50.7 per cent between 2017 and 2021.

While the uptake of LED lighting for interiors is set to increase at a fast rate, it is set to decrease for exterior uses.

The report states that the use of packaged LEDs in exterior general lighting lamps, such as those used on streets, in car parks and tunnels, accounted for 90 per cent of the worldwide comsumption of this technology.

However, by 2021 exterior LED lighting will only account for 61 per cent of the total.

Despite the volume of this form of light for exterior uses decreasing, its value will grow.

One of the reasons for the growing popularity of LED light bulbs is the promotion of this form of lighting by companies.

Sainsbury's and Toyota are just two of the firms that are hoping to raise awareness of this form of lighting.

The supermarket chain has launched a sustainability competition, according to Greenwise.

Across its 900 stores, the company will be showcasing market-ready innovations including low carbon lighting solutions, such as LED, from small British firms.

Toyota meanwhile is embracing LED lighting to cut its commercial costs.

The uptake of this type of lighting is also set to increase due to its affordability despite slightly higher upfront costs.

Due to these bulbs' energy efficiency and increased lifespan, over the long-term the costs involved are lower.
