Arrowe Park and Clatterbridge hospital introduces a green scheme

A Wirral hospital trust is introducing a £6.3 million “green” scheme it reduce its carbon footprint in local hospitals. The scheme made by Arrowe Park and Clatterbridge hospital is expected to reduce their carbon footprint by 6,200 tonnes a year which is better described as removing 3,900 cars from the road.

The trust has decided not to use its own money for the scheme so they have created a long term funding plan via the carbon and energy fund. The hospital have quoted that they believe the scheme will save them £250,000 a year.

The scheme itself will be carried out over a 15 year period with the help of an energy management team known as ENER-G, they will design, build and operate the new system. The system will work with combined heat and power also known as a CHP system which will allow the scheme to produce its own energy supply.

David Hounslea, director of estates and facilities for Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Trust, said: “This ambitious project will reduce the carbon footprint at our two acute hospitals by approximately 30% and will be financed through the energy savings we generate.

“This scheme builds on existing energy efficiency projects, which have already reduced the Trust’s carbon dioxide emissions by 14,000 tonnes per year since 1999.”

Alan Barlow, Managing Director of ENER-G Combined Power Ltd, said: “Our specialist healthcare team has delivered projects across more than 50 hospitals.  We
