Dozens were left without power after a fire at Scott Fyffe roundabout
Two days ago, there wereseveral buildings left without power in Dundee due to a fire in an electrical box. After a blackout caused by the fault, emergency services and engineers raced to the Scott Fyffe roundabout. Shops and other local businesses, including the Boars Rock pub and the local branch of TSB, were left without any source of power following the incident at 12 noon.
Police had closed the nearside lane of Arbroath Road as well as the inside lane heading out towards the Kingsway which allowed the engineers to work on the damaged electricity box. Throughout the whole drama, there was a fire engine on standby from Kingsway fire station. John Rollo, the manager at the Boars Rock pub said the power had just gone out before noon.
“A police officer came in and told us there had been a problem on the Kingsway,” Mr Rollo said, “apparently water went into one of the power boxes and started smoking before catching alight. We have just set up candles and torches because we don’t have backup power. We are doing the best we can. All the shops along the road have lost power.”
A spokesman for Police Scotland Tayside Division said: “An electrical box went on fire at the Scott Fyffe roundabout. We were called in at 12.10pm to carry out traffic controls. The nearside lane of Arbroath Road and the inside lane heading towards the Kingsway were closed.”
Fire Scotland were also called to the scene with their spokeswoman saying, “It was reported to us that a electricity box was on fire. When we attended we requested the Hydro board also attend. Their engineers isolated power to the box and requested the police attend for traffic assistance. We sent one appliance from the Kingsway at 12.01pm.”
Scottish Hydro’s spokesperson said the power to 26 customers was disrupted.
“Engineers were on site before 12.15pm. They isolated the power supply to 26 customers to carry out the repairs safely. The overall repairs should be completed about 7pm this evening.”
