Portable Heaters

Portable heaters are a low cost option that can help lower electricity bills however they do pose a threat such as fire and electrical risks. There are many portable heaters on the market such as oil filled radiators, fan heaters, convention heaters and halogen heaters.

Over the last five years there has been over 4,000 fires caused by portable heaters which has resulted in 73 deaths and over 1,000 serious injuries. Electrical safety first has carried out a survey which shows that nearly half of the surveyed population would use portable heating to keep warm. A staggering 40% would leave a heater switched on and unattended on many occasions overnight. Alarmingly, of those surveyed 33% of people would use a portable heater to keep an elderly relative warm.

To minimise risk while using a portal heat source there are a few simple steps that can be taken:

·      Never leave a portable heater unattended

·      Never leave a heater on while you sleep

·      Position the heater at least three feet away from anything that could catch fire

·      Only buy heaters from reliable sources

·      Don’t plug a portable heater into an extension as this could cause an overload

It is vital that you make regular checks on your heaters to make sure that there is no cable damaged as this could be a potential fire risk. If you do spot any signs of wear and tear do not use your device and make sure to get it checked by a professional.
