Pavement explodes into flames in front of shocked bystanders

Up to fifty people were evacuated from a busy shopping street during rush hour when flames erupted through the pavement unexpectedly. The blaze was caused by an electrical fault under an electrical manhole cover outside an Iceland branch in Islington which caused great panic among shocked shoppers.

Bob Webb, 64, who owns Caledonian Glass and Glazing Company nearby said "Our fuse started to go funny and the lights went out, then all smoke was pouring out of the pavement. Then there was a big explosion and fire started coming out.

"The weird thing was there's a crossing right next to it and people were still crossing the road there; it was crazy.

"They closed the road off so everyone had to go behind a barrier, but I was allowed to stay in my shop - believe it or now, I wasn't allowed out."

Umit Bakir, who runs a minicab business nearby said “The bulb in my office kept flickering so I knew something was going on with the electrics.

“I looked outside and I could see the fire coming up from underground. Then the fire brigade came and closed the road.

“My business was far enough away, but if I had been at Iceland I would have been a bit worried.”
