When you're looking to redecorate your home, the ultimate efficiency of your electrical devices and heating systems is normally buried at the back of your mind, behind which lovely paint colour you're going to put on the walls and how many cushions you're going to have on the sofa.

However, according to Alastair Ramsay, sustainable development manager for residential electrical installation specialists Legrand, there are a number of tools and usage methods available for homeowners to consider when they first start thinking about renovating their home, which can have a positive impact on those first post-redecoration fuel bills.

"Today there is a huge choice of devices and systems that deliver energy savings," said Mr Ramsay. "For any homeowners who have already benefitted from the easy energy savings delivered by proper insulation, but still want to make further significant savings with minimal effort, then lighting management has to be on their list."

Lighting management sees homeowners install tools such as consumer units, light dimmers and personal electricity meters to keep track of, manage and minimise the power consumption taken up by personal lighting.

And as a result, they can make significant savings on their fuel bills - especially important today, as cabinet minister Ed Davey warned green energy taxes could hit household bills.

The Energy and Climate Change secretary warned that green energy policies, such as the carbon floor price policy, could see energy costs rise for the consumers and companies subsidise the introduction of non-gas energy supplies such as windfarms.

As a result, it's more important to have energy saving devices in place ahead of any price inflation.

"At its most basic level, replacing a switch with a modern dimmer will save energy and allow the user to adjust the light to a more comfortable level," said Mr Ramsay.

"Adding a presence sensor enables even greater energy savings thanks to the system's ability to either dim or turn off lights when no one is present in the room.

"An installation is easy. Systems will either plug-in or replace an existing control."
