How to Take Care of Your Tools

Spending large amounts of money on tools and equipment can be worth it if you take good care of them. Keeping them stored properly and cleaned will save you money in the long run as you won’t have to replace parts such as blades.

With keeping the tools secure and stored you could keep them in your garage but if you have limited space you could store them on pegboards or boxes as long as they are sturdy and away from water. A pegboard is an excellent choice of storage if you are limited with space as it can be attached to a wall making the most efficient use of wall space.  Of course these can be used even if you don’t have enough wall space as there are portable options available.

Toolboxes also make for great tool storage, offering the primary advantage of portability. While some people opt to store all their tools in toolboxes, for most, the toolbox is a way of carrying around your most-used tools while leaving the bulk safely stored on pegboards, shelves, or drawers.

Keep your tools in a dry place. It seems obvious, but garages can have humidity issues, especially if they are not heated or air-conditioned. If you keep your tools in a location like this, especially if you keep them out on shelves or peg boards, consider investing in a dehumidifier to keep the dampness down

Make sure and hang up your garden tools don’t leave them on the floor as the moisture can gather on them and cause them to rust which if left unnoticed for too long could cause costly damage.

If you get a storage box with your tools don’t throw it away as this is a common mistake as these tools are much safer in the hard plastic case as it protects them from dirt, dust and water. If you don’t have the original storage box then keep wrap them in packaging and place silica gel packs into the packaging as it keeps the moisture at bay.

Cleaning the tools is essential if you want them to last a long time for example if you are using power tools or garden tools simply wipe them down with a rag and dry them well afterwards, to prevent rusting wipe a thin layer of WD-40 onto them to create a thin seal around the product.
