What is a contactor?

A contactor is an electrical device which is used for switching an electrical circuit on or off. Typically controlled by a circuit which has a much lower power level than the switched circuit.

Some people get confused between a relay and a contactor. The basic difference between the relay and contactor is that the contactor is used in applications with higher current carrying capacity, whereas the relay is used for lower current applications.

Normally Opened & Normally Closed Contactors

Contactors can be field mounted easily and are compact in size. Generally, these electrical devices feature multiple contacts. These contacts are in most cases normally open and provide operating power to the load when the contactor coil is energized. In a normally open switch when the switch is off, the contacts are open. This means the electrical connection is broken so the switch is “off”. In normally closed switches, the contacts are closed which connects the switch meaning that when they are not compressed, they are switched “on”.

There are various types of control devices, and each type has its own set of features, capabilities, and applications.

We offer next day delivery for our control devices.
