Although there are several big investments homeowners can make to ensure their property retains as much heat and uses as little energy as possible, it is cheaper and more efficient to change your behaviour.

This is the advice from Issi Lammas of Greenchoices.org, who noted that while double glazing can save money over time, it might be better to look at your appliances to see where you can cut costs.

"When it comes to replacing dishwashers, washing machines or tumble dryers it will save money in the long-run to choose the most energy-efficient models," she pointed out.

"Energy monitors can be useful in helping get to grips with what energy is being used in your home."

If you have a fridge or freezer that you bought 20 years ago, it is probably worthwhile replacing it with a more effective one. You could also make small changes like recycling packaging instead of throwing it away, and choosing to walk or cycle rather than take the car on short journeys.

"Bigger changes such as installing loft or wall insulation will help with energy bills," added Ms Lammas.

Householders who are concerned about the impact their fuel bills will have on their finances this winter could also invest in LED light bulbs to save money.

Meanwhile, Consumer Focus has warned that consumers will see the half-year profits announced by Big Six energy supplier SSE as "obscene".

Adam Scorer, director of policy and external affairs at the organisation, commented: "The furore over wholesale costs, energy pricing and company profits has deepened consumer distrust in the energy industry.

"If confidence is to be rebuilt in this market, the information that all energy firms are required to provide must be fully transparent, comparable, and include profit and trading information from across the whole of their business."

As a result, Consumer Focus is calling on the government and industry regulators to ensure the energy market works for its customers.
