Electrical Safety

There are many hazards when it comes to electricity but the main ones are electric shock and burns, injury from faulty electrical equipment and explosions due to a build-up of electricity. Electric shocks can also cause further damage such as falling from ladders and scaffolds.

In order to prevent these sorts of accidents happening to you or someone who works for you, you must carry out a number of steps.

·         You should carry out checks on all electrical equipment so that you know they are safe for use. Make sure that the plug and cable is not damaged or broken and that there are no burn marks present on the product or its surroundings. If there is damage of any kind make sure you get it checked out by a qualified electrician as they will know how to best fix the problem.

·         Make sure to get buildings inspected regularly so that all wiring and circuits can be checked and assessed so that fires and other electrical hazards can be ruled out. The electrician will usually check wired in equipment, sockets, light switches, appliances, meters and consumer units.

·         Make sure that you and your team know how to use all the electrical equipment properly.

·         Make sure that there are enough sockets available for use to rule out overloading of sockets and adapters.

·         Ensure that cables are not loose are trailing along the floor so people cannot trip or fall.

·         Before cleaning appliances make sure you switch them off and unplug them from the wall.

·         If an appliance is not functioning properly or makes strange noises immediately stop using it and have it checked by an electrician.

·         Use RCD’s as they will stop a surge of electricity hitting you as they cut off the electricity supply if they sense danger such as contact with water etc.
