Pub To Get A Green Lighting Makeover

A pub which has gained its fame for sticking to its old traditional ways has now opted to move into the modern age with the start of 2014. The Norfolk Arms, which is generally a refuge from any new modern age gimmics and gizmos, is now going to go ahead with a LED Lighting makeover, thanks to the steyning 10:10 Climate Action Group and its Greening Campaign.

Although the pub is not known for its technological innovation, however the owner of the Church Street pub, Pam Tyler, said she is delighted to make this change saying, “Energy bills are a big issue for a business like ours, so anything that keeps the cost down is welcome.” The project was first mentioned following a ‘green drinks’ evening held in the back room by the Steyning Greening Group.

LED lighting was the subject of November’s monthly get together; with special guest James Wing from Henfield firm Sustainables4U, experts in LED. After hearing and discussing the benefits on how much energy could be saved as well as cash by upgrading to LED lighting, someone looked up and noticed that Norfolk Arms pub was using a whole set of old fashioned energy wasting 60W light bulbs.

Investigations in the main bar revealed more worrying results, with a set of halogen downlighters, which produced more heat than light rendering them very inefficient. Treasurer Mike Croker suggested a quick solution asking the group, “Why don’t we have a whip round and pay for Pam’s lighting to be upgraded?”

Seeing as Pam had been welcoming the group for over 3 years for their monthly meeting, all the members agreed that it would be a nice Christmas gesture. Geoff Barnard, who coordinates the greening group, said: “If they work here, they’ll work anywhere. So, though it’s an unlikely place to learn about new technology, it’s the perfect launch pad for our LED campaign.”
