Milk is the greatest, milk is the best. If you leave milk untouched for long enough, it turns into cheese. If you put it in a pail and shake it, it turns into butter. There really isn't any need for any other food.

But what does LED lighting have to do with milk? Well, kind of a lot, if the new range launched by Intershape Ltd is anything to go by.

The Northamptonshire-based dairy and cattle supply company has developed a new range of lighting for commercial dairy buildings, following a study earlier this year published by Oklahoma State University. Researchers found that switching the lighting in dairy sheds from fluorescent to LED light bulbs increased milk yields by as much as six per cent.

And that means that the superior quality light provided by LED bulbs - which use less energy, and thus cost less to maintain - results in a larger amount of milk being produced for the dairies, and a bigger profit when the eventual product is sold.

"As dairy units get bigger and cows spend more time inside, Intershape is committed to providing dairy farmers with the most up-to-date technology to keep their cows in the best possible conditions," said Intershape's Paul Butland.

"These lights, in combination with our mattress, rubber flooring and ventilation products will allow dairy farmers in the UK to make their dairy buildings as comfortable and healthy as natural pasture, with healthy, stress-free, high yielding cows and reduced labour and energy costs."

And while the development of the AniLEDlight product proves the flexible and practical applications of LED lighting outside of the normal home or office building environment, LED bulbs have additional benefits more specific to the dairy development sector.

As LED bulbs produce no ultraviolet light, they don't attract flies - meaning they help create a more comfortable atmosphere for both the farmers and the cows. The quality of the more natural-seeming light also helps workers identify surface skin conditions or welfare issues among the animals.
