Installing energy efficient lighting is a 'no brainer'

In films featuring the undead juddering back to life, you never see them up on a roof affixing a solar panel or going around the home with a tube of injectable insulate plugging up draughts. Zombies always seem more preoccupied with eating humans than taking measures to ensure the green credentials of their home.

However, according to Marshall-Tufflex, a cable management provider specialising in the construction industries, introducing energy efficient measures around the home is a "no brainer" - and as a result, more property owners should be installing them in their home.

"We have seen over the last three years a real momentum towards energy saving," said Marshall-Tufflex's Richard Beale.

The move, said the expert, was a two-pronged affair: homes and businesses are looking to save money as well as energy.

"The government is driving the fact that businesses have to look at their energy consumption," Mr Beale continued. "There are also some carbon reduction commitment criteria that people need to adhere to.

"Also, in these tight times, people are looking at every way to save money. They can do it with technology and - with an average payback of between three to five years - it seems a fairly no-brainer thing to do."

Technology such as LED light bulbs, for instance. They provide a solid, warm light - nothing so clinical and sterile as many people expect - and as interior design guru Jo Hamilton can attest, they are wildly practical and easy to install.

"Like with LED tape, you can literally stick it under units and you have either coloured lights or those crisp, clear lights," she says. "You can have a warm white or a cool white, and then there are shades in between.

"The warm light for interiors of homes is lovely, and perhaps much better than blue lights, which are better suited to restaurants or bars."
