Generators are often a saviour when the power cuts off especially for businesses that needs the power on at all times. Many homes today also have generators installed so that they too can have some light on to make it a bit easier when the power goes off. However many homes aren’t aware of how important it is to be aware of the dangers and risks that a generator can pose.

If you are thinking about installing a generator in your home make sure to contact your electrician before you purchase one as you need to check that it is suitable for your home. As many home generators don’t have enough power as you think you may turn on your television and as a result the screen could burst as a result. An electrician will be able to tell you all this information and he will be able to help you pick the best generator for your home.

A portable generator must be kept outdoors for safety purposes and so that there is suffice ventilation for the generator.  The generator itself should never be kept indoors as it gives off deadly carbon monoxide fumes which could kill you.

If you decide to install a permanent generator which is in place all the time it must have a transfer switch. Basically the transfer switch stops energy from leaving the generator so that the power cannot travel up the power lines where it could harm a lineman. This process is commonly known as back feed which your electrician will be able to tell you more about.

Before operating a generator make sure that all appliances and devices are switched off an unplugged, the reason for this is to prevent the unit from overloading.  To make sure the generator does not overload switch on only the essential items such as lighting.

Like all electrical devices there is high risk when operated around water. It is best to keep the generator dry and away from moisture and rain. For example create a canopy structure which keeps direct rain away from it and water from beneath it.  The generator itself generates a lot of heat and as a result you could get burnt if you touched it during operation.

Remember always to follow instructions both the manufacturer instructions and your electrician’s instructions to ensure that yourself and your family is safe when the power goes out.
