Top Selling Electrical Products By Year

Electronic products have become a necessary part of our daily lives. With innovative technology on the rise, there is a wide variety of electronic products to choose from. In the UK, the average volume of consumer electronics per person is expected to reach 2.5 pieces in 2022 (Statista, 2022).

Innovative technology also means more consumers purchasing such products. However, since there are so many products to choose from, the top-selling items often change from year to year.

If you are interested in consumer electronics or want to know which electrical products to choose from, here are some important statistics about top-selling electrical products.

Electrical Product Trends In The Future

Since technology is constantly evolving, there are new products to choose from every year. These innovative electronics often perform much better than current products and provide a higher level of convenience. Here is a look at electrical product trends in the future.

  • The revenue of the electronic product market is expected to reach 1.1 billion USD in 2023. The predicted growth rate for this industry is expected to be around 2% until 2027.). With this statistic, we can predict the landscape of the electronic product market in the upcoming year. As the revenue for this industry, manufacturers should ensure that their output is of high quality to meet the consumers’ growing demands.
  • The largest market segment in the electronics industry belongs to the telephone sector. Experts indicate that the telephone market will reach a market volume of 498 billion USD in 2023. The segment includes mobile telephone products and their associated data (Statista, 2023). Many consumers use a mobile phone, therefore, manufactures are always trying to bring the most innovative product on the market.
  • Apart from regular electrical devices, there will also be a bigger push toward smart products. The smart home devices market is expected to experience a boom in the next 5 years. Market research indicates that almost 130 million households are expected to own at least one smart device (weforum, 2022).
  • The current household penetration rate for smart devices in the UK is 45.8%, making up almost half of the region’s population. This number is expected to grow significantly to 98.8% by 2027 (Statista, 2022).

What Are The Top Selling Electrical Products Worldwide?

Every consumer has their favorite electrical product, whether it's a smartphone, tablet, or gaming console. However, not all products have an equal level of popularity. Here are the best selling electrical products worldwide.

  • According to customer surveys, the most popular electronic product worldwide is a mobile phone, with over 96% of consumers owning this product (Oberlo, 2022). A mobile phone is one of the most accessible electronic products, which is why this product is in demand. However, the type of products varies according to brand and features.
  • The next most popular electronic worldwide is the smartphone, with 95.8% of consumers owning this product (Oberlo, 2022). The small difference between smartphone owners and regular mobile phone owner shows that many consumers are willing to opt for a smartphone instead of an ordinary mobile phone. Smartphones provide consumers with various features and options for comfort and convenience.
  • The third-most popular consumer electronic worldwide is a laptop or desktop computer. In 2022, 59% of consumers used these products daily (Oberlo, 2022). Even though laptops and computers are among the top five best selling electric products, there is more than a 30% difference between those who own these products and smartphones. One reason for this difference could be that smartphones are more portable and have better features than laptops. The most innovative smartphone performs all the same functions as a computer or laptop.
  • Here are other electronic devices that consumers choose as their top products (oberlo, 2022) :
    • Tablet device: 34%
    • Smartwatch and wristband: 28.7%
    • Gaming console: 20.3%
    • TV streaming device: 15.9%
    • Smart home device: 15.2%
    • Feature phone: 7.7%
  • Virtual reality devices took the last spot as the most popular consumer electronic product, with only 5.4% of consumers choosing this device. (oberlo, 2022). Even though this number seems low, the number of people owning virtual reality devices have increased by 14.9% in the past year, making them one of the fastest growing electronic product.

Top Selling Electrical Products In The UK By Year

Now that you know what products consumers are opting for worldwide, it is important to look at the best selling products in the UK to make a comparison. Additionally, you must also look at past trends in electrical products to determine which device is becoming more innovative over the years.

Here are the top selling electrical products in the UK over the last five years.

2022

  • In 2022, the top selling electrical product in the UK was a smartphone. According to customer surveys, over 96% of users choose smartphones as the electrical product they use the most. (Statista, 2023). In comparison to the worldwide best selling product data, we can see that even in the UK, smartphones take the number one spot as people’s preferred electrical product. Smartphones are now considered almost necessary in today’s modern world; therefore, this device has significant staying power.
  • To understand just how popular smartphones are, it is important to look at past trends. Between 2016 and 2022, the number of smartphone users in the age group 55 and up grew by 82% (Statista, 2023.). This figure is significant because it shows smartphone as one of the most accessible electronic devices. With more innovative technology, we can expect smartphones to become even more accessible to a wider demographic.

2021

  • In 2021, the consumer electronic industry experienced a boom in terms of sales. More than 90% of UK residents purchased electronic products this year. Some of the top selling items include gadgets, home appliances, laptops, and electronic accessories. (techround, 2021). The reason for this high growth was the pandemic lockdown, with many purchases happening on online e-commerce sites.

2020

  • In 2020, UK residents purchased 21 million digital devices to stay connected during the pandemic lockdowns. According to customer surveys, one in five UK adults bought an electronic device online (deloitte, 2023). This is another statistic that highlights consumer spending habits. More and more people prefer to buy their electronics online than in person. With the lockdown, people could easily access an electronic e-commerce site and purchase their favourite products. Another reason for the high number of purchases during this time period is the need to stay connected and entertained.
  • In terms of products, the report indicates that 6% of consumers bought televisions, 6% bought smartphones, 6% purchased laptops, and 5% bought gaming consoles. These were the top selling products in 2020 (deloitte, 2023).
  • However, not all devices experienced a growth in sales. In 2020, the ownership of desktop computers fell from 45% to 40% (deloitte, 2022). Apart from TVs, many consumers prefer products that are portable and versatile. Smartphones, tablets, and laptops are easy to carry around, and they also outperform in terms of features and performance when compared to desktop computers.
  • Despite many people opting to purchase electronics in 2020, the overall revenue of consumer electronic products declined compared to previous years. In Q1 of 2019, the revenue reached 934 million GBP; however, in Q1 of 2020, the revenue fell to 911 million GBP (Statista, 2023). Even though this is not a major decline from the 2019 figure, it is much lower compared to previous years. One reason for this decline could be the affordability of electronic products. During the Covid-19 pandemic, many people suffered financial setbacks, which can contribute to the declining market revenue. While more innovative products are available, some are costly, which can be a significant barrier to purchase for a wide demographic.

2019

  • In 2019, smartphones topped the list as one of the best selling electrical products of the year. Over 95% of UK residents aged 16 and up used this device in their daily lives (Statista, 2023). As seen in current trends, smartphones are one of the most popular electrical devices in the UK and worldwide.
  • Out of this list, VR headsets and consoles took up the last spot, with only 19% of UK residents owning these products (Statista, 2023). With this figure, we can see that the VR market is much smaller compared to other electrical devices. Even in a survey of participants aged 16 and up, these products are not as popular as smartphones. One reason for this lack of sales could be accessibility and awareness. Not many people are familiar with this technology therefore, with informative marketing, it is possible to improve the market share of VR products.

2018

  • In 2018, the tech industry experienced a boom in terms of sales. This category was the top five most-purchased gift category that year (thinkwithgoogle, 2023).
  • In 2018, the top selling electrical products included smart speakers, smart watches, wireless headphones, and wireless speakers (thinkwillgoogle, 2022). This data shows that many consumers opted for entertainment-related entertainment technology and devices that used to be wired.
  • Smartphones were still one of the most popular electronic devices in 2018, with 78% of adults using these devices to access the internet (govuk, 2018). This figure shows that the majority of the people in the UK use a smartphone as their main mode of accessing the internet and this trend will continue in the future as smartphones become more intuitive.

2017

  • In 2017, 77% of UK residents used a smartphone, while 92% used a mobile phone (Statista, 2017). With this data, we can see that mobile phones were far more popular five years ago than today. In 2022, smartphone usage has far exceeded the use of regular mobile phones. Smartphones are becoming more popular in recent years due to evolving technology and the need to stay connected online.
  • Additional top selling electrical products in 2017 included smart TVs, fitness trackers, and other connected devices (Statista, 2017).
  • In 2017, many consumers still preferred owning a landline telephone, with over 60% of UK residents choosing this as their ideal electrical device (Statista, 2017). This statistic highlights the change in attitude towards landline phones over the past five years. In 2022, landline phones were not listed as one of the top selling electronic devices however, in 2017, a significant portion of the UK population owned this product.

What Are The Most Popular Electrical Product Brands?

Just as there are multiple types of electronic products, there are several brands to choose from. Some brands offer multiple electronic devices, while others specialise in a select few items. Here are some of the most popular electrical brands according to UK consumers.

  • In 2022,  Sony was the most popular electronic brand on the market, with 80% of the consumers having a positive experience with their products (yougov, 2023). Sony is a well-known electronic consumer brand specialising in various electrical products.
  • Other popular brands include:
    • Duracell: 75%
    • Panasonic: 74%
    • Samsung: 73%
    • Currys: 68%

Out of the top five popular brands, only one brand (Currys) is of UK origin (yougov, 2022) Since there is such a high demand for electrical products in the UK, the government should invest in manufacturing such products.

  • The current ranking of products shows a significant change from last year. In 2021, the most popular electronic brand in the UK was Samsung, with over 81% of consumers having a positive opinion of their products. (Statista, 2023). With this statistic, we can track the popularity of Samsun in the UK as the brand went from becoming the number one preferred brand to the fourth most popular company in 2022.

Where Are UK Consumers Buying Electrical Products?

As technology keeps evolving, consumers are also changing their shopping habits. In the past, many people would visit stores to purchase their electrical devices.

While this is still true today, more and more consumers are opting to shop online. Here are some important statistics that highlight how people purchase their electrical products.

  • Almost 87% of UK residents have purchased atleast one electronic product online in the past 12 months. This makes the UK the second country with the most online purchases in Europe, behind Norway. (nasdaq, 2014). These statistics highlight just how many consumers prefer purchasing their products online. With more e-commerce websites opening up, this number could increase significantly in the future,
  • In 2021, online retail sales reached a value of 120 billion GBP, showing a significant increase from the past years. (Statista, 2021).
  • Amazon’s UK e-commerce website was the top choice for consumers in the UK. The website generated over 5 million USD in consumer electronics revenue in 2021. (Statista, 2023). Apart from electronics, Amazon also carries various other products and devices, making it an ideal e-commerce site for many consumers.

The Growth Of Smart Electronic Appliances

With technology evolving every year, many consumers are opting for high-quality products. Such products include smart devices that elevate standard electronics. Smart products provide better control over your device and allow access to several advanced features.

Many consumers also purchase multiple smart connected products to build a smart home. Here are some important statistics that highlight the shift towards smart devices and home products.

  • In 2022, the smart home market is projected to reach a revenue of 117.60 billion USD. (Statista, 2023). This revenue has been on an upwards trend since 2017. With this statistic, it is clear that 2017 was the catalyst for the high demand for smart home devices therefore, the demand is set to rise even more in the years beyond 2022.
  • The current revenue is expected to increase with an annual growth rate of 13.64%, leading to an estimated market volume of 222.90 billion USD by 2027 (Statista, 2023). With a larger market share, you can expect even more innovative and intuitive smart home devices in the future.
  • The UK smart home tech market shows a potential annual growth rate of 16.79%. This growth is estimated to increase the value of the market to 12.28 billion GBP by 2027 (Statista, 2023). With a lucrative market, consumers can expect better products that are far more efficient than current devices. A bigger market could also have the potential for more economical products allowing more people access to smart devices.
  • As mentioned before, UK residents are much more likely to purchase smart devices. The current household penetration rate for smart devices in the UK is 45.8%, making up almost half of the region’s population. This number is expected to grow significantly to 98.8% by 2027 (Statista, 2023). With this figure, we can see that the UK is a key market for smart home product manufacturers; therefore, it is important to produce quality products that will increase growth and demand.
  • UK households spend £33 billion on smart devices during the pandemic (insightdiy, 2021). Since many people were quarantining or staying safe at home, there was an increased demand for smart products to make home living more comfortable.
  • 24.9% of UK internet users between the ages of 16 and 64 own at least one smart home device (finbold, 2021)
  • 64% of UK residents spent money on smart products in 2018. Out of this figure, 42% of the residents have spent at least £100. (smarthomeweek, 2018).  With this statistic, we can see that people in the UK are willing to spend money on products that make their life more comfortable.

With these statistics, we can see that electronics are an important part of people’s lives, and with innovative and accessible technology, the ownership of such products will rise. Innovation will also bring forth newer products that might change the trend of current top selling electrical devices in the future.
