Can a simple light change bulb actually help you sleep better?
Exposure to LED Warm White light allows us to feel good, makes us more alert, boosts our resistance to disease and now can help us to sleep better at night – Light plays a crucial role in helping our body to function properly as well as help produce the correct amount of essential hormone melatonin. By making a few simple changes to our exposure to light we could sleep better, feel better, and reduce the risk of certain diseases, although it should be noted that is it also essential we get the right nutrients, exercise and lifestyle as well.
Scientists have now discovered in more depth the major effect light has on our health. SAD, a widely known acronym for Seasonal Affective Disorder, fits the condition perfectly as it is a known affect during the winter season; many people suffer depression due to the lack of sunlight. However, it is more complicated than just either making us happy or sad. Blue is the colour which keeps us awake as opposed to colours at the red end of the spectrum which are more conductive to allowing us to sleep better. A lot of the devices that we now engage in before going to sleep tends to show the colour blue spectrum which keeps us awake, these may be from the reading a book on your e-reader, on your tablet for work or fun or even using your phone for communication or social media.
The American Medical Association said in a 2012 Policy Statement, “the power to artificially override the natural cycle of light and dark is a recent event and represents a man-made self-experiment on the effects of exposure to increasing bright light during the night..."
In order for us to get back into our more normal biological clock routine, we need to adjust our exposure to light to allow our bodies to function more on a ‘time zone’ as nature intended. The only light that should be on when sleeping is the alarm clock on your iPod docking system when you’re ready to sleep
