Lighting secrets of the super bowl

With the freezing temperatures across the US over the last few months it was the job of the ground keepers to keep the football fields in top condition for games both high profile games such as the super bowl and for weekly league games.

The only way they could keep the grass in top condition was to keep huge grow lights on for the cold winter months. The reasoning for the lights was to prevent the grass from dying from the lack of natural light and the grow lights proved to be a solution.

The most well-known system is in place for the packer’s stadium, the lighting system was made by a Dutch company who specialize in these types of lighting for soccer pitches across the globe.

The packers decided it was best to give these lights a trial run back in 2010 as they weren't sure on how successful they would be, but luckily they worked!

The system works in conjunction with the under soil heating system whereby the pipes under the soil are filled with anti-freeze to keep them from freezing along with keeping the grass soft. The additional heat from the lamps encourages the grass to grow even in the bitter winter temperatures.

As the lights take up the whole of the field it takes at least four assistants to get the huge lights moved when the grass is being cut or when maintenance takes place. I suppose it would get a bit annoying having to move the lights back and forth across the pitch many times a year.

Each bulb has wattage of 1000W so I would hate to see the electric bill that the Packers rack up over the cold months.

As the story of the Packers has become so well-known over the last few years many other stadiums are adapting the same method for their fields.

Most recently the New York Red Bulls, the reason for them choosing the system is due to the architectural structure of the stadium as many areas of the grass are constantly shaded and as a result they have had poor brown grass.

Once the Red Bulls installed the system the grass was significantly improved due to the heat of the lamp which caused huge growth in the grass.

It will be interesting to see with climate change over the next few years will many other stadiums across the states adapt the same system as the packers and the red bulls.
