Is the Electrical Car as Green as We Think?

The new concept of electric vehicles are seen as playing an important part of reducing global by helping to cut fuel emissions, however it comes with a few set backs.

We know from scientists that what comes out of the car will be safe for the environment, however the question they have now arisen is how green is their credentials actually going to be?

The concerns that they specifically have are on these two areas;

·        How the electricity which powers the cars will be generated and;

·        How the vehicles, especially their batteries are going to be manufactured

Guillaume Majeau-Bettez, from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology has said, "The electric car has great potential for improvement, but ultimately what will make it a success or failure from an environmental standpoint is how much we can clean up our electricity grid - both for the electricity you use when you drive your car, and for the electricity used for producing the car."

There have be many financial problems for manufacturers, one manufacturer in particular Fisker Automotive has announced that they will be laying off around 75% of their workforce with the need to borrow money from the US government. The overall market for the electric cars has became dimmer, even with major automakers such as Nissan with the ongoing problem of how to make it appeal to customers, with the lack of range and recharging times being the key factors.

Jason Kavanagh, engineering editor at the research firm Edmunds.com said, "Sitting around for eight hours waiting for your (Nissan) Leaf to charge up is not exactly a selling point, EVs have a sitting-on-your-ass factor that conventional cars do not."
