Li-Fi is the future of the next upcoming generation of wireless internet which will be cheaper and faster than Wi-Fi signals using data transmission through LED Light bulbs. It works by transmitting data through the use of visible light, and is said to have transmission speeds 250x times faster than ‘superfast’ broadband.

3Gbit/s was achieved earlier this year, and had held the recorded for the fastest speed recorded until Li-Fi beat it with a staggering 10Gbit/s. It is believed that this new technology will be the future of internet connection due to its ability to be faster and cheaper compared to Wi-Fi we have now.

Both signals use electromagnetic spectrum; however both have different ways of operating with one using visible light and the other radio waves. The biggest advantage with Li-Fi is that because it uses visible light it has the capacity to be far greater in terms of data density, in fact 10,000 times more than radio waves which Wi-Fi currently uses.

Li-Fi works by having the bulb switched on and off quickly, although it works that fast that it  cant be seen by the naked eye. However, the biggest drawback is that light cannot past through solid materials meaning if light is penetrated the signal is lost. This also makes it harder for hackers to hack into an unsecured internet through the use of an out of sight transmitter.
