Gran Canaria gets first Offshore Wind Turbine

Spain has become the latest country in the EU to launch its very first wind turbine offshore. The 5 Mw turbine is located on Gran Canaria. It stands 505 feet tall with a width of 205 feet long blades, supplying 7,500 homes with energy for heating, lighting and cooking.

At the official opening Jose Manuel Soria, Industry Minister said. "In the first half of the year, more than half of all the electricity produced in Spain came from renew able sources".

Spain, is ranked 4th in the world, for its capacity of Wind Energy, however despite Spain having 5,000 miles of coastline, it’s surrounding seas are too deep to further try and boast wind turbines.

With Spain having a 26.3% unemployment rate, the employment given by the installation of new turbines outside Spain could help increase employment with all turbine parts created in Spanish factories which employs more than 4,000 people
