PVC Insulation Tape

PVC thermal insulation tape is a type of electrical tape that is suitable for indoor and outdoor use, as it is very durable and weatherproof.

The main purpose of PVC insulation tape is to enable electricians to insulate wires and other electricity conducting materials. The tape is wrapped around an electrical wire to prevent a short circuit which could lead to a fire or someone being electrocuted.

The tape is ideal for most electrical insulation, binding, and colour coding. Colour coding with electrical tape allows electricians to organise their wiring systems effectively.

When submerged in water, PVC electrical tape loses its adhesive properties, and the seal is unable to hold its shape under water pressure. How To Apply Insulation Tape?

Make sure to check the minimum and maximum temperature rating of any electrical tape before using it. Also, make sure that your preferred electrical tape has a UL approval rating. Once you purchase the correct insulation tape grade, you can begin the cable organisation process. Here is how to apply insulation.

Step 1 - Half Lap The Insulation Tape

To ensure proper application of insulation tape, apply the tape in a half-lap configuration. Half-lap taping means overlapping ½ width of the tape layer. With half-lapped tape, you will have a double layer of insulation tape. 

For added protection, make sure that the tape is thicker than the cable or wire’s insulation. Generally, you should do a minimum of two half-lapped tape layers. You can also wrap your tape one and a half times the thickness of the cable’s insulation. Choose the wrapping method that provides the best insulation. 

Step 2 - Stretch The Tape While Wrapping

Insulation tape works best when it adapts to the shape of the object it is being applied to. When applying your electrical insulation tape to a wire or a cord, you must stretch the insulation tape as you wrap it. When you stretch the tape while it is being applied,  you provide extra insulation to any areas without proper protection. 

Always wrap the tape 75% of its width to create effective insulation. This level of insulation will ensure that your tape will withstand any dangerous elements. Avoid adding any tension in the last wrap to prevent flagging. 

Step 3 - Avoid Using Insulation Tape As A Replacement For Wire Nuts

Once you put down one level of insulation tape, you might need to use wire nuts for further reinforcement. Avoid using electrical insulation tape as a permanent insulation fix. Some copper wires produce an electrical current that produces heat. This type of heat can cause insulation tape to degrade over time. 

If you're thinking is electrical tape heat resistant? The answer is; it depends. While some electrical tapes are heat-resistant, there are many electrical tapes that are not designed for this application. If you are using electrical insulation tape for a temporary pigtail splice, make sure to wrap the tape beyond the end of the wires and then fold it backward. This configuration provides a protective layer that prevents any cut-through. 

How To Decode Different Coloured Electrical Tape? 

Coloured electrical tapes are often used for coloured-coding wires and cables. There is a wide range of coloured electrical tapes, and each colored electrical tape has a specific purpose. It is important to note that there are key differences between coding systems in the UK and the US. Here is how to decode coloured electrical tapes. 

Black Electrical Tape

Black electrical tapes are one of the most common colours for electrical tape. Most electricians use black electrical taps for the actual protection of wires and connections. Other electrical tape colours are used for phasing purposes. 

Wires that need to be phased are marked with a ring of black coloured electrical tape near termination at each wire end. This coding clearly indicates the purpose of each wire. 

White Electrical Tape

White electrical tape is not used as widely in the UK and internationally for phasing purposes. However, in the US, white electrical tape typically signifies a low voltage or neutral wire. In the UK, white electrical tape is commonly used for visible and external applications such as white cabling. This tape provides a better aesthetic on multiple domestic and household appliances. 

Blue Electrical Tape

In the UK and the US, blue electrical tape is used to indicate low voltage phase C. In international applications, the blue electrical tape is used for low voltage, neutral sheath 230V.

Green Electrical Tape

Green electrical tape typically indicates earth in the UK, while in the US, green tape indicates earth ground. For international applications, green and yellow striped tape usually show insolated ground. This colour tape is also used in the US.

Brown Electrical Tape

Brown electrical tape is not as widely used as other coloured electrical tape in the UK. However, brown electrical tape in the US indicates high voltage phase A. Internationally; brown electrical tape signifies low voltage phase A. 

Yellow Electrical Tape

Red Electrical Tape
