How to Choose the Right Lighting for Each Room

Proper lighting in the home helps make a house a home as it enables you to perform tasks easily as well as making you feel safe. However lighting comes in various designs, shapes and sizes and depending on the room it will more than likely determine what type of light you go for. Here are some ideas to consider when planning your lighting needs for each room in your home.

Foyer, Halls, and Stairways

The foyer of your home gives the first impression of a home’s interior therefore you want to choose a light that will give off a good first impression. A traditional chandelier or contemporary pendant will provide basic illumination and create a welcoming atmosphere.

If you have a lot of artwork in your hallway choose an adjustable recessed downlight as the light can be altered to focus on your art.

Not all hallways can accommodate a large chandelier, so make sure the size proportions are correct. Likewise, if you have a larger space, you'll need a larger fixture. If you'll be able to view the fixture from above, make sure to select a foyer chandelier or pendant that looks attractive from second story viewing.

Do not forget about your stairs as they must have good lighting for safety. To prevent accidents stairs should be lit both at the top and at the bottom with switches in both places.

Living Area

Use lighting to bring out the best in your living spaces. Enhance your room's ambiance, dramatize wall textures, accent artwork, or just provide general illumination for your den, living room, family room, playrooms, or bedrooms. A variety of different types of lighting fixtures will work for both your general lighting and accent lighting needs.

The most common type of lighting for living areas is recessed lighting because the light source is concealed. Wall scones and lamps are also a popular source as they are both decorative while still providing enough light for tasks such as reading etc.

Today many homes are opting for energy saving LED lights as they are more cost effective as they can last for more than 50,000 hours!

Exterior Lighting

Whether your goal is to enhance the beauty of your home, or provide additional security, you have numerous lighting options to light up your home's exterior. Extend the hours you can spend outside, or create a festive environment!

Decorative outdoor lighting is best for pathways, on walls or entrances as this helps complete the overall feel and look of the home while still providing enough light for safety.

Try to include some lighting that is designed for security such as step lighting, deck lighting and landscape lighting.
