Homeowners 'not aware' of energy loss

Homeowners are still pretty useless when it comes to energy efficiency, according to Age UK. They've had enough, the charity. They've had enough of heat leaking out of single-glazed windows, of lights being left on in vacant rooms, of phone chargers being left in the plug despite the battery being full. They have just had it with us, all of us.

That's according to a new survey by Age UK, anyway. The charity found that, despite 60 entire years of the government urging homeowners to cut back, 42 per cent are still clueless when it comes to monitoring their energy usage.

However, respondents do still clearly care about saving energy: 87 per cent had splashed out on energy-saving lightbulbs or invested in LED lighting, while 75 per cent had installed double-glazing and had a cupboard full of draught excluders.

But that's not quite enough to make your home resilient to heat loss and energy price hikes, as Age UK Enterprises' Gordon Morris explains.

"It's great to see that nearly everyone is trying to conserve resources by installing energy-efficient technologies such as roof insulation," he said. "But by far the most important step in reducing electricity consumption is being aware of how much is used and which day-to-day activities use the most electricity."

He pointed out that homeowners aren't always aware of the easy-to-fit technology that could be added to their home to help track the use of energy around the house.

So as well as introducing green initiatives to a build, homeowners might need to be reminded that energy maintenance is an important consideration if they truly want to slash their bills.

Meteor carry a wide range of electricity meters that can gauge consumption around the home, and fit in neatly when installed next to consumer units and fuse boxes.
