Half a Million lights lit for charity breaking Guinness World Record

Lights are an important part to the Christmas Festival as well as the gifts, food, wine and more. A family from the capital of Australia, Canberra, has shattered a Guinness World Record for the 2nd time by lighting more than half a million lights for charity. Dave Richard and his family have reclaimed back the world record by displaying a total of 502,165 bulbs as Christmas lights. He is currently a barrister from Canberra, and has won the title for the 2nd time, with the string of lights extending to just over 31 miles when measured end to end.

He first won the prestigious title in 2011 when he illuminated his residence with 331,038 Christmas lights. His record was then broken by a family at their La Grangeville residence in New York last year who managed to light 346,283 bulbs. Eager not to give up on the title, the family worked toward installing more than half a million Christmas lights, along with candy canes, reindeer, multicolored streamers, led strip lights and other decorations for the big holiday for the noble cause of raising funds for SIDS & Kids ACT - The children's charity works to fight sudden infant death syndrome.

David mentions, “We lost a child and SIDS looked after us, so the charity is very close to our heart.” He has received enormous support from many of his neighboursover the last few weeks as well as his family and close friends. He has also admitted that since his 1st world record in 2011, many of his neighbourshave not spoken to the family.

In 2011, an astonishing $77,000 was raised for the charity and this year the family hope to raise over $100,000. People can visit his residence from the 30th November to 16th December and entry in by donating a gold coin.
