Deter thieves and save money by installing LED lighting in your garden

With the British summer being what it is, outside lighting is always going to be useful: when the grey clouds overshadow your garden party or barbeque, it's always worthwhile to have a little illumination to cheer you up in the drizzle.

However, lighting a garden on the odd occasion the weather holds out long enough for you to throw a get-together isn't the only application for outdoor lighting. As well as spotlighting your outdoor spaces long enough to find your keys when you come home on a gloomy night, outdoor lights can act as a deterrent to any would-be burglars in the area.

Bob Turney, a notorious south London criminal turned government penal reform adviser, notes that criminals often target houses that don't look like they are keenly maintained, something garden lighting can counter.

"If you get an opportune burglar walking down a road and a house looks a little bit unkempt, the psychology is maybe the occupants are not so up to speed on their home security," says Bob. "If a house is tidy and nice, normally those people have good home security."

But having the floodlights on all night long won't help you make friends with your neighbours, and nor will it be an especially effective anti-theft measure: garden spotlighting has been known to over-illuminate outside areas, creating more areas of shadow and shade that would-be burglars can move through undetected.

Instead, install your garden lights on a sensor to react to movement, providing illumination when you and your guests want to spend time in the garden while acting as an early-warning alarm system if anyone steps foot in your garden after dark.

Opting for LED lighting for your garden - be it replacement bulbs or LED floodlights - is also an intelligent option. Fittings such as the 30W LED Floodlight provide the equivalent of 200W of halogen lighting for a fraction of the energy use, and the bulbs are designed to last for longer - much longer - so it could be years before you next need to dig up your lamp and change the bulb.
