With the cold now sweeping in from the Arctic, British householders will be looking at ways to keep their homes warm without breaking the bank.

And according to Big Six energy supplier E.ON, the best way to do so is to take a look at the boiler to check it is working correctly.

Chris McLain, head of home energy services at the provider, noted that it is best to be prepared.
"Ideally get an annual service maintenance inspection and check during the summer months as well because if you do find any problems then you can spot them earlier and can rectify them earlier so when you do need to use the boiler, it is available and it is there ready to go," he said.

It might also be wise to sign up to a boiler service plan in which you pay a small amount each month and can rest assured that should something go wrong with your heating system, you won't be shelling out significant amounts to fix it during the coldest months of the year.

Meanwhile, research from price comparison site uSwitch has revealed that an average increase of seven per cent in gas and electricity costs this winter will force a further 314,000 households into fuel poverty - which is the term used when a household spends more than ten per cent of its income on heating the home.

EDF was the latest of the Big Six to announce hikes, with both gas and electricity going up by 10.8 per cent on December 7th.

To combat the price rises, homeowners could implement energy saving measures like only putting the heating on for a couple of hours in the morning and evening, or by swapping their old incandescent light bulbs to efficient LED lighting to make a difference to their electricity bills.

The uSwitch research also found the vast majority of us (nine in ten households) are going to ration our energy use this winter, as the cost of fuel consumption is our biggest financial worry at the moment.
