Some energy saving tips

We all know we could do more around our homes to save energy but we are often unsure how to do it properly or think it would be too expensive. However with a few free changes you could be saving hundreds on your bills.

  • If you turn your thermostat down by just 1°C you can save over £60 per year. Also if you keep your heating on constantly at a low temperature it could save you more money rather than blasting heat on and off. Check out our blog on how to reduce energy heating.
  • Turn down the pressure in your shower as high pressure showers waste a lot of water, often more than a bath.
  • Turn off your prewash on the dishwasher as this is done using hot water, save your water by simply scraping the dishes before you put them in the dishwasher.
  • If you have a large freezer keep it as full as possible as it will mean the freezer won’t have to work as hard as empty spaces waste more energy than a full freezer.
  • 90% of a washing machine's energy expenditure is spent on heating the water, so if you wash your clothes at 30-40 °C you're saving significant amounts of money.
  • Take your clothes out of the dryer before they're completely dry - they'll iron much quicker and you'll use less energy on your drier.
  • Unplug all the appliances that you aren't using regularly. Also, make sure you're not leaving appliances on standby such as televisions etc.
  • Make sure you have sufficient loft insulation. As the heat rises as much as 25% of the heat in your house could be disappearing into your loft space.
  • Don’t over pay on your energy bills make sure to compare different company prices to ensure you are getting the best deal for your money.
  • Switching to LED lighting will help you save money.
