Garden Electrical Safety

With the warm weather beginning to return it means more time is spent outside for both children and adults. Whether you are doing the gardening or playing games with the children you need to be aware of some electrical hazards that may occur.

Here are some tips to keep you and your family safe:

·         Its common sense to know that water and electricity do not mix, but summer showers may increase your risk of electric shocks, therefore do not use any electrical items even if the grass or tarmac is slightly damp.

·         To reduce your risk even further make sure to use a plug in circuit breaker in your outdoor outlets and in your garage to cut off the electricity if there is a fault or traces of water.

·         Make sure to check manuals and labels of electrical items to make sure that they are suitable for outdoor use as some may not be. For example only some extension cords are suitable for use outdoors. Also double check that the product is has undergone safety testing so that you are assured it is safe for use.

·         Inspect your products for wear, tear and damage. As damaged products should not be used and should be taken to a qualified electrician so that the problem can be fixed before use.

It is also important that children know the importance of safety:

·         If they see a power line that is down remind them to stay away from it and report it to an adult.

·         Do not play with toys such as remote control airplanes and kites near power lines.

•        Do not play around neighbourhood electrical substations or boxes.
