Energy Companies Could Be Under Threat

Energy Companies could be under threat with Solar Batteries making the use of home generated power much easier.

The solar batteries will store solar power for the use of home generated power for when the sun doesn’t shine with the possibility of creating of creating ‘smart grids’ which can react to sudden power swings when needed.

However, this piece of technology is still costly and not used on a wide scaled basis although with energy bills rising it could be answer to the consumer’s problems.

Italy has some of the highest power prices in Europe and is looking at how to cut costs to allow its businesses to compete.

Nicola Cosciani, head of energy storage at Italy's top industrial battery maker Fiamm said, "Germany and Italy will be explosive markets for residential storage and big energy users are also starting to show an interest. This is a game changer."

By 2020, the EU aims to get 20 per cent of its energy from renewables. That compares to 12.5 per cent of the EU energy mix in 2010 and 8.1 per cent in 2004, according to most recent EU statistics.

The use of solar batteries will be the vital key to gaining this target as well as households embracing eco-friendly measures around the home such as low-energy lighting and consumer units.

Power storage is said to increase drastically within the next 3-4 years due to solar subsidies and battery prices failing.

The solar batteries look similar to a car battery which are generally installed in the basement of a house and connected to a solar panel outside and a grid with an inverter. This allows the batteries to charge and store excessive amounts of energy when its light and release it when it’s dark.

"Due to rising supply and awareness, we expect several tens of thousands of these systems to be sold in Germany this year," said Norbert Hahn, board member at IBC Solar.

Batteries are also needed to develop smart grids, which adjust power supply to satisfy demand across the network.
