Elkay Electrical to lose 35 employees by the end of year

There are 35 jobs to be terminated by the end of year in an electrical firm in Powys. Staff at Elkay Electrical, which is part of Thomas & Betts, has been handing out redundancy notices after it announced it would be closing it Newtown factory.

It has been noted that the Welsh government said the firm turned down an offer to discuss methods to try and save the facility. The announcement was ‘absolutely devastating’ for the local area said Montgomeryshire AM Russell George. Mr George expressed his concerns earlier this month about the future of the factory to Economy Minister Edwina Hart. “This will be a particular blow to the community and, couldn’t come at a worst time the run up to Christmas,” he said.

“I have been keeping in touch with the Economic Development Minister on this issue and she has informed me that Business Wales alongside her official people will continue to work with the company and support their employees as much as possible. “Discussions will now be continued and organisations such as Career Wales and Business Start Up will allow access to all relevant support.”

A spokesperson for Thomas & Betts said that the Newtown factory will be dividing into other existing sites; mainly in Birmingham. A statement said, “The decision for the closure of Newtown factory has been taken to help improve overall efficiency, improve flexibility and lead times in order to support and maintain the current Sales level of Cable protection Systems. There will be an opportunity for 27 transfers for positions in the Birmingham site, and we are willing to offer any help to the individuals who wish to transfer to a new location.”

Disappointed upon hearing about the company’s closure, Montgomeryshire MP Glyn Davies said, “It is imperative that it is the responsibility of the Welsh government officials to do everything in their power to help find new training opportunities and employment for the staff affected.”
