Deaf man asks for flashing lights instead of a fire alarm

Ken Jarvis from Blackburn has asked that flashing lights be installed in his home because his smoke alarm keeps going off, meaning he is getting regular visits from the Fire service. Mr Jarvis who is deaf unintentionally set off the alarms when he is cooking and has asked Twin Valley Homes if it would be possible to have a fan installed above his cooker and flashing lights in oppose to smoke alarms to alert him.

Mr. Jarvis has been given a pager and a vibrating pillow, however he has found them both inadequate, and feels the flashing lights would solve this problem especially if he’s at the toilet or in the hall.

Duncan Emmet, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service has briefly mentioned that it is important to get the early warning sign in the case of a fire and other devices be made available for people with hearing difficulties such as the flashing lights.

Ian Bell of Twin Valley Homes has released the following statement “we have worked extensively with Mr. Jarvis and were unaware of any of the current issues, as we installed equipment briefly to his required needs however we will continue to work alongside Mr. Jarvis to ensure that all the support is there to help ensure his safety.”

One such flashing light that could be installed for Mr Jarvis is an emergency light that flashes when smoke is detected.
