Carbon Monoxide awareness week

This week is an important week as it is Carbon Monoxide awareness week. The public safety initiative has been organised by the Commission for Energy Regulation and it is supported by governing and public bodies throughout the energy sector.

The initiative is aimed to promote awareness of the dangers of carbon monoxide such as poisoning and to showcase preventative measures that all home owners can implement.

The Commission for Energy Regulation (CER), SSE Airtricity, Bord Gáis Energy, Electric Ireland, Energia and Flogas are among the energy related organisations that are backing the initiative.

The dangers of Carbon Monoxide

Many factors can increase the chances of the production of Carbon Monoxide on a property such as:

  • Poorly services appliances
  • Running engines in confined spaces
  • Faulty or damaged heating appliances
  • Poorly installed appliances
  • Blocked flues or chimneys
  • Lack of proper ventilation or reduced ventilation
  • Improper use of heating appliances

Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide poisoning

There are many symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning that can be similar to the cold or flu such as headaches, sickness and aches. Higher levels of CO can lead to unconsciousness and death therefore if you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning you should seek medical help.
