Smart homes, are beginning to get a lot smarter, especially with the new Nest App

Nest, maker of the learning thermostat and the protect smoke alarm, will have automatic updates to its mobile companion App on Android and iOS. The new revamped mobile app, has a more streamlined look to control both home based devices.

From the home screen, users can quickly swap between their Home and Away settings while still being able to check the outside temperature and weather conditions at a glance. Most importantly, the page includes icons for all the devices which are connected – the thermostat is a black circle which will have the set temperature recorded inside it, and the smoke alarm is signified by a neon green ring with both changing colours depending on their uses.

By tapping the thermostat icon, the controller immediately provides more details on screen, as well as allowing access to the heating timer, fan timer and energy history, without the need of switching your phone to landscape mode, an issue with the previous app which people will be delighted to know has been fixed. If the user clicks on the smoke detector image, they will be brought to a simplistic page where the colours green, yellow or red will be shown. This is the same for both smoke and carbon monoxide, providing details regarding the last update, last manual test and how much battery life is left in the device.

The web based nest.com has been redesigned to match its mobile counterpart, and to keep the whole user friendliness over the two platforms. Nest plan developer program is set to kick off early next year in 2014. The company will provide access to a near real-time Web API that will allow forthe control of the Next Thermostat and display of its current configuration.
