World Wide Consultation Has Been Launched On LED Street Lighting

A global consultation on street lighting has been launched by The Climate Group and Philips. It was launched at the Future of Urban Development session of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The overall aim of the consultation is to understand the barriers and constrictions to the adoption of LED street lighting, and identify ways to overcome these barriers. Harry Verhaar, global head of public affairs at Philips Lighting, said: “The urgency to combat climate change and the potential of energy efficient LED lighting to help tackle this has been recognised.”

The consultation is set to run until the end of autumn, with a series of meeting planned with representative from cities and regions, such as Hong Kong, Brazil, Beijing, India, the United States, Europe and the Gulf Region as well as the LED industry. These meeting discuss LED financing, the benefits of LEDs, lighting standards, smart lighting and the socio-economic impact.

Mark Kenber, CEO of The Climate Group, said: “The monetary and civil benefits of LEDs are clear; they will save our cities money and create safer environments to live and work in. We now need to scale up the use of energy efficient lighting across our cities.”

The consultation comes as the European Commission outlines its plans for climate and energy policy until 2030. The plans include a target to reduce carbon emissions by 40 per cent from 1990 levels and an EU-wide target for at least 27 per cent renewable energy. The framework is still to be debated by the European Council and European Parliament.
