Who is dominating the lighting market?

Who is dominating the lighting market?

According to IHS, LEDs are predicted to accounting for 32 percent of the entire global lamp revenue with some new players poising to grab market share from the three big players. The lamp industry for decades has been dominated by three major players – Osram, GEand Philips.

It no wonder that these three big players have been dominating the industry for so long, as people are using the same technologies they were previously using in the 1900’s, just that its now modern and up to date.

With governments all over the world starting to ban incandescent lamps and opting for households and business to use more energy efficient technologies, it leaves the big question ‘When Incandescent lamps go, what will take their place? – Will it be halogenlamps, CFL(Compact Fluorescent Lights) lamps or the more popular LED(Light Emitting Diode) lamps?

HIS has forecasted that 2014 will be a big year for LED lamps, with them accounting for 32% of the entire global lamp revenue. It is likely that companies will expand their LED lamp portfolios so that their products will be placed on retailers shelves to be selected and installed into people’s home.

It’s quite obvious to see this trend as some lighting companies who hold share (Cree, Panasonic, TCP and Havells) are broadening their LED lamp portfolio to ensure they don’t get left behind. With the competitors competing against one another for a place in your living room it means that consumers are now beginning to get LED lamps much cheaper, than prices earlier this year and last year. Some manufacturers that are reluctant to change the price of their LED lamps have started to lose their share in the market gradually.

With fierce competition in the market, manufacturers have to take smaller margins if they want to be competitive in the residential sector. Companies like Samsung, Toshiba, and LG who have a substantial business outside of lighting (will be able to hang on longer, while pure lighting players have to either accept lower margins or move out of the residential sector altogether. However, the main factor will be down to mostly price, although brand recognition along with reliability will also play an important role in what lamp the consumer will purchase.
