The Brightest Light In The World – The Luxor Lamp, Las Vegas
The Luxor Lamp located in Las Vegas, Nevada has the strongest light beam in the world at a staggering 42.3 billion candela. With the ability of using curved mirrors, the Luxor Lamp focuses the light from 39 xenon lamps into a narrow beam in which a person could read a paper from 10 miles up. Also, on a clear night, the beam can be seen from 275 miles away from all aircraft cruising at attitude, such as LA.
The Lamp was first powered on in October 1993 and has operated reliably ever since. Each Xenon Lamp is worth $1,200 and 7,000 Watts and when its operating at full power, the system costs $51 per hour with $20 per hour for the electricity used for it 315,000 Watts. Since 2008, only some of the lamps are lit in order to save on energy and it might also be the world’s best bug attractor, which has created a new ecosystem of bats, moths and owls.
