New York City has proposed that in the next 5 year they will change al 250,000 street lights with energy saving  LEDs. This massive change is the biggest LED retrofit in the country and it will save approximately $6m in energy and $8m in maintenance. The switch was brought about by Mayor Bloomberg’s sustainability program, whereby he wants to decrease government caused emissions by 30% by the year 2017.

As part of a pilot control, there have already been parts of the city which have been replace with Streetlamp LEDs which can last up to 20 years compared to the 6 years the high-pressure sodium lights that they have currently in place. There has been change at the present time in Central Park’s paths, Manhattan FDR Drive, Eastern Parkways and several more.

In December, the project will carry out its next phase which will focus in replacing the lights throughout the rest of Central Park and all surrounding roadways in that general area. The scheme is funded by ‘ACE’ in which $10 million out of the $100 million fund will be used for this project.
