Southeastern will be installing energy-saving LED lights at 11 stations and five depots after a successful pilot scheme at Chatham.

The new lighting is aiming to save money that can be invested in network improvements and produce a safer environment for passengers.

LED lights will be fitted on platforms and in car parks, where stations use the most energy.

The trial began in Chatham last year.

It showed that energy costs could be cut by as much as 25 per cent, equivalent to a saving of almost £1 million a year.

Over the next three months LED lighting will be fitted at Sevenoaks, Tonbridge, Hastings, Ashford, Ramsgate, Faversham, Gillingham, Bromley South, Hither Green, Orpington, Dartford, and Waterloo East.

The stations have been identified as currently consuming the most amount of electricity.

The new lights will also be installed at West St Leonards, Ramsgate, Gillingham, Grove Park, Slade Green depots.

In car parks they will operate with motion sensors, dimming by 20 per cent when there is no movement.

This will enable CCTV cameras to capture activity more effectively.

David Statham, managing director of Southeastern, says: “The new LED lighting is brighter and crucially has no lamp failures and a longer life, so it’s about providing a safer environment for all our passengers.

“The LEDs also create a better ambience on the platform at night and of course are more environmentally friendly, saving energy and money that we can spend on further improvements across the network.”
