LED Lighting Options Need To Meet Demands For Economy and Sustainability

More and more medical professional have started to incorporate LED Lights into their operating room, for a number of good reasons. The LED surgical lights allow the amount of light to be increased while still maintaining a cool temperature, using half the electrical energy of the traditional halogen bulbs. LEDs also have a longer life span meaning clinicians have years of dependable use.

Back in 2009, it was projected by the Millenium Research Group that 100% of European clinicians will make the switch from Halogen to LED by the end of 2014. The report stated, “LED lights represent roughly 60% of the European surgical light in 2009, but will be completely overtaken by the year 2014.” MRG cited doctors’ commitment in Europe for environmentally sustainable practises as being the key reason for the wide sweeping trend.

In the United States, researchers are hoping that clinicians will also begin to adopt this LED lighting system. According to the study, from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, many members of the Hospital Energy Alliance were eager to explore what benefits LED Lighting could offer them. Since LEDs have been introduced onto the market and gaining popularity they have become an integral part to common medical practices. The technology has moved to medical organisations and hospitals all over the world, moving beyond just Europe.

Matt Cameron, biomedical engineer for DRE Biomedical said, “Investigation in LED medical lighting is a great way to increase the life span of your surgery lights as well as gain the benefits of the newer technology. Halogen users who make the switch will notice change in electrical consumption – about half of what halogen lights use, offering more colour and very little heat from the beam and light head itself”

DRW offers the Maxx Luxx as there primary model for surgical lighting rated for 50,000 hours of use. The DRE Vision LED Surgery Light, which is similar, is best suited to smaller procedures and surgeries. Both are available in various floor, wall and ceiling configurations.
