Government Set To Embark On Street Lighting Project

Mr. John Jinapor, the Deputy Minister of Energy, has recently announced the government’s plans to embark on a massive street lighting project across the country. He said the illumination system of all major towns and cities will be improved significantly so that security would be strengthened and night life activities will be promoted. This would also have a lead on effect when in trying to entice investors, with Mr. Jinapor saying that the pilot phase of the project has already commenced in the Tema Metropolis.

He was speaking to newsmen after touring a warehouse and plant of the Prefos Company Limited, an electrical engineering company in Kumasi, the contractors awarded the project. The company is currently assembling components of the street bulbs at its Adako-Jachie plant near Ejisu. The deputy minister expressed the government’s determination to provide every corner of the country with electricity, adding that, in some communities which are deprived the installation of solar street lighting systems were ongoing.

Mr. Jinapor said this move to engage local companies on the project was not only to support them by helping to creating jobs for the youth but also to help ensure that quality raw materials were used in the production of the bulbs which will allow for a longer lifespan. He praised the Prefos’ management for their performance and urged the people to report anybody who are seen stealing the street light bulbs. President of the Ghana Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Seth Adjei Baah, who joined the Deputy Minister on the tour, said every, “Ghanaian had a part to play in the nation's development.”

The private sector needed to be supported to grow to take up major government projects at all levels to help open employment opportunities and transform the lives of the people. Mr. Baah counseled employees of the company to ensure hard work, dedication and teamwork was used it order to achieve set targets, with Managing Director of the Company, .Mr. Alexie Kwasi Fosu, saying the company, pledged quality job and to work within given deadlines.
