New CPR Cable Regulations UK

The British Cables Association has created a new CPR (Construction Products Regulation) guide for wholesalers and distributors throughout Northern Ireland and the UK. This guide is aimed to raise awareness of the legal responsibilities when selling cables within the constructions industry.

From 1st July 2017, it will be compulsory for cables, with a reaction to fire performance and that are intended for permanent installation in buildings and construction works, to be accompanied by a Declaration of Performance (DoP) and have CE marking.

While it is the manufacturer’s responsibility to apply the CE marking and provide the DoP with the cable, the guide clarifies the wholesaler or distributors specific legal requirements. Unlike numerous other EU countries, the UK doesn’t have a legislation that regulates the level of performance required for cable with respect to fire reaction and is unlikely to in the future.

The performance level of cable is set in classes, the guide explains the general nature of the range available so that the distributor may have an knowledge of the different varieties and their terminology.

Wholesalers and distributors must ensure that the cable they sell is kept within the regulation. The product whenever required must have a CE marking and have documents accompanied under this regulation in the language, determined by the Member of State concerned.

Before making a construction product available on the market, the distributor must guarantee that the manufacturer and importer have complied with the requirements set out. Any wholesaler which supplies a product under its own brand or name will be subjected to the same legal responsibilities as the manufacturer.

Meteor Electrical have liaised with each of our suppliers to ensure that the cable we supply our customers is meeting the new regulations which have been implemented.
